FAQ's

1. Do I need to be an experienced rider?

Yes.

2. What do we mean by an "experienced rider"?

Our safaris are designed exclusively for competent riders. For the safety of our horses and the enjoyment of every guest, we only welcome intermediate and advanced riders.

To help you know where you fit, here’s how we define the different levels:

Not Suitable for Our Rides:

  • Beginner – Learning the basics: walk, stop, steer, and rising trot. Balance and control are still developing.

  • Novice / Strong Novice – Comfortable at walk and trot, and canter, but only in a controlled environment. Not yet fully secure or confident in open country or for long hours in the saddle.

Welcome on Our Rides:

  • Intermediate – Secure, well-balanced, and in control at all paces (walk, trot, canter, gallop). Comfortable riding for several hours and confident in open country and varied terrain.

  • Advanced – Experienced and very well balanced, with soft hands and an independent seat. Fit enough for long hours in the saddle, comfortable with spirited horses, and able to manage fast, sustained canters and unexpected situations.

Why This Matters:

Our horses are responsive, forward-going, and happiest when ridden by confident riders. To maintain their welfare—and to keep the rides enjoyable and safe for everyone—we ask that all guests meet at least the intermediate standard.

3. Do you have a weight limit?

Yes. We have a strict weight limit of 85kg. Unfortunately, as we would love to accommodate everyone, our horses are not big and stocky enough to comfortably carry more weight than this on our long journeys and through rough terrain.

4. Do you do day rides or half day rides?

No.

5. Do you have a minimum or maximum age limit?

This is a ride is for adults. We don't have an age limit, as long as you are fit and capable.

6. What equipment do I need to bring?

We will send a full list before your adventure, but there is no special equipment beyond normal riding clothes that you feel comfortable in. Please note: we do not supply riding helmets. P

7. Will I have to share a room?

We have sharing and non-sharing prices available, however, there is limited rooms available for each ride and this means that you may have to share. It is also possible that you might not have to share if you have not paid a non-sharing price. It does depend on the dynamics of the group (i.e. couples and friends). You will need to contact us for each individual ride and we can help figure out the best options for you for the ride.

8. What if I need to cancel?

Please note that all deposits are strictly non-refundable, regardless of when you cancel. Our trips are often booked months in advance, and we spend significant time preparing for each one. Last-minute cancellations are difficult to accommodate, which is why this policy is in place.

  • If you cancel 40 days or more before your trip, you will not be required to pay the remaining balance, but your deposit will be forfeited.

  • If you cancel within 40 days of your trip, you will still owe the full cost, and no refund will be issued.

9. What is required to book?

Step 1: Make contact with us

Step 2: We will send you a Rider Information form

Step 3: Once you have been accepted (you have adequate experience and are within out weight limit) you will be sent and invoice when you are ready

Step 4: You will need to pay a 50% deposit within 3 working days of receiving your invoice

Step 5: The full amount is due 45 days before departure

10. What type of horses do you have?

We have a range of crossbreeds ranging between 14.3hh - 15.2hh. They are all comfortable out on the trail and in a wilderness environment. They are kept fit by schooling, outrides and our exercise track. They sleep out but are groomed and attended to daily. We have an off-season in the summer when it is extremely hot. The horses get yearly vaccinations and spend time relaxing and just being horses in large spaces and herds.

14. What are your options for airport transfers?

2026: Transfers from Pietermaritzburg Airport are ZAR 600 for 1 - 3 people per trip.

2026: Transfers from King Shaka International Airport (Durban) are ZAR 900 per trip for 1-3 people and ZAR 1,500 per trip for groups of 4 or more.

15. What type of saddles do you use?

Most of our horses are in a mix of lightweight trail saddles as we find they are more comfortable for the horses over longer distances and rough terrain. We do have some English GP saddles available if you'd like to use on request, but it is not always possible if they do not fit the horse you are riding.
